2 . Tessa Leyland & Marie Purificacion

Tessa and Marie, students from Simon Fraser University, Canada, arrived at FSB on January 27th, 2017, to complete volunteer internships until April 12th, 2017.  Tessa and Marie had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects within FSB and to promote the clinic’s activities. They both participated in the organization and delivery of a one-day training program hosted by FSB for a group of Female Community Health Volunteers.  With sponsorship from Tessa and Marie, FSB was able to host a Free Health Services Camp, with a focus on primary health care and gynecology services, on March 18th, 2017, in the community of Gothatar. ...

3 . Female Community Health Volunteer Training Program

On March 7, 2017, FSB hosted a one-day training program for a group of eight Female Community Health Volunteers who serve the peripheral area of the clinic. The program consisted of three presentations; basic hygiene and sanitation by Tessa Leyland and Marie Purification, volunteers from Simon Fraser University, maternal and child health by Anita Khadayat and Shrijana Hamal, Staff Nurses, and the history and services of FSB by Dr Shyam K. Shrestha, Medical Director. 4 . HealthRight International

On August 10, 2016, FSB entered a fiscal sponsorship agreement with HealthRight International and on October 2, 2016, FSB and HealthRight International finalized a memorandum of understanding.

5 . Rediet Mersha & Blen Girmay

With the support of Prof. Peter Navario, Executive Director of HealthRight International and Professor at New York University (NYU),  Rediet and Blen arrived at FSB on June 20th, 2016, to conduct research until July 29th, 2016.  Rediet and Blen, students from NYU’s School of Medicine, conducted a research study assessing the role of FSB in the communities of Northeast Kathmandu, with a focus on maternal and child health and patient satisfaction.  This study employed four methods of data collection; maternal and child health interviews, a patient satisfaction survey, community focus groups, and personal observations. &nbs ...

7 . Dr. Janet Grimes

Dr. Janet Grimes, a Family Physician from Boston, USA, volunteered her services at FSB from October 29th, 2015, to May 8th, 2016.  During her stay Dr. Grimes played an active role in promoting the clinic’s activities through establishment of relationships with local Tibetan communities and other NGO’s, including Rokpa and Shanti Sewa Griha.  Dr. Grimes also examined patients at FSB and assessed the needs of the clinic.  With her help, FSB was able to build a relationship with the National Reference Laboratory for laboratory investigations not currently performed at FSB.  Dr. Grimes also volunteered her physici ...

8 . Sandy Shergill & Laura Parker

Sandy and Laura, students from Simon Fraser University, Canada, arrived at FSB to complete volunteer internships on February 15th, 2016.  Sandy volunteered at the clinic until April 29th, 2016, and Laura volunteered at the clinic until May 7th, 2016.  They participated in many of the clinic’s activities and presented an observation report. 10 . AJWS Earthquake Victim Relief Fund Grant

In May 2015 the American Jewish World Service supported Friends of Shanta Bhawan with an emergency Earthquake Victim Relief Fund grant to provide free medical services to earthquake victims living in Northeast Kathmandu, through our clinic in Jorpati, and in the Sankhu area, through a portable health camp.  The portable health camp offered doctor consultations, follow-ups, and medication, all free of cost.

11 . Dr. Bianca Grecu & Nathan Jacobs

Dr. Bianca, Emergency Medicine Resident from UC Davis School of Medicine, and Mr. Nathan Jacobs, Biomechanical Engineer, from the United States of America arrived at FSB on April 9th, 2015, for a month-long volunteer service.  Dr. Grecu was of great value to the clinic and to the community, providing her expertise in treating almost 17 patients per day.  Dr. Grecu also appreciated the opportunity to observe and treat diseases that are rare or eradicated in the USA, such as rheumatoid fever and various water born diseases.  Mr. Jacobs was instrumental in helping FSB's management to find strategies to sustain the clinic fina ...

12 . Visit of Professor Nathan Kuppermann, MD, MPH

Prof. Natham Kuppermann, Bo Tomas Brofeldt Chair of Emergency Medicine and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at US Davis School of Medicine, along with Ms. Maya Kuppermann, from the United States of America visited Friends of Shanta Bhawan from March 26th to April 4th, 2013.  Professor Kupperman again visited the clinic in 2015.  FSB is very appreciative of Professor Kupperman's continuing support.

13 . 28th Annual Meeting of JAIH in Okinawa, Japan

Dr. Shyam K. Shrestha, Medical Director of FSB, attended the 28th Annual Meeting of the Japan Association for International Health in Okinawa, Japan, from October 29th to November 5th, 2013.  Dr Shyam was invited to attend the meeting by the Bureau of International Medical Cooperation, National Center for Global Health Medicine, Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Shyam presented research from his paper Prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy and Associated Factors in Chitwan District, Nepal.  During his visit he also discussed future collaboration opportunities and promoted Friends of Shanta Bhawan Nepal.

14 . Rotary Club Medical Equipment Donation

The Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square, Nepal, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Osaka-Temmabashi, Japan, gratiously donated over $30,000 in medical equipment to FSB on November 25, 2012 through the Rotary Matchng Grant # 77641.  Club president Rtn. Kazuhiko Kawahara, along with 10 Rotarians from Japan, presented FSB with the donated medical equipment, including an X-Ray machine, Ultrasonogram, Biochemistry Analyzer, and an ECG machine. Past District Governor, district 3292, Rtn. Yogendra Man Pradhan, district officials, and Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square also attended the handover ceremony. Rtn.
