Our History

Friends of Shanta Bhawan, Nepal, was founded in 1983 by American doctor Dick Matron in Patan, Lalitpur. In Nepali, Shanta Bhawan means “Palace of Peace”. The name originated from Shanta Bhawan Hospital, initially a maternity ward, which is now known as Patan Hospital.

In 1984, the center moved to Jorpati, Kathmandu, along Bouddha road. The organization was initially funded by Friends of Shanta Bhawan, California, USA.

From 1997 – 2011, the American Himalayan Foundation, another USA-based organization, funded the center.

In 2011, under new management, the organization started operating independently on a self-sustaining model.

In 2016, FSB partnered with HealthRight International for fiscal sponsorship.

At the moment, FSB continues to thrive and grow while serving the community!
